From the Fields
In the spirit of the “underground,” U.S. potato farmers will provide a glimpse into growing conditions and local crop updates throughout the season. They will also share insights and family recipes passed down through the generations.
From the ground up, potatoes are naturally nutritious. Potato plants grow as a stem with leaves above ground and tubers that grow from the roots underground. Harvested during the spring, summer, and fall, potatoes are available year-round. Thankfully, that’s what makes America’s favorite vegetable accessible and affordable for everyone! And, the varieties are endless; from russet to red, Yukon Gold to Purple Peruvian, a rainbow of potato varieties are grown across the U.S.
Beyond the fields, America’s potato growers have taken an active interest in teaching Americans – and students in particular – how to eat healthfully and live an active lifestyle. From participating in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade™, to conducting school assemblies about nutrition, potato growers are always on the go. They’ve even launched a School Wellness Grant program this year and will give away $25,000 to help improve the health of our nation’s youth. You can read firsthand about some of our grower adventures throughout the year at the Potato Underground.
